The Rose Deborah Altschull Endowment for Youth was established in April 2008 in memory of Rose Deborah (Debby) Altschull, a lifelong educator and advocate for children in Virginia, who passed away February 11, 2008 after a short but difficult battle with metastatic breast cancer.
Debby graduated from The American University and began her career as a physical education teacher in Petersburg, Virginia. She continued teaching part-time in Richmond while her two children were in school. Once her children were in high school, she went back to earn her Master's in Elementary Guidance Counseling at Virginia Commonwealth University. For the next 17 years, she worked at various elementary schools in Henrico County, becoming a well-known advocate for children's rights. Throughout her life, Debby also volunteered to bettering the lives of others, from children to the elderly. She particularly enjoyed volunteering with her husband Clifford’s South Richmond Rotary Club, becoming actively involved with The International Hospital for Children, for which she helped transport patients to and from the airport, hospital and housing during their stays in Richmond.
Upon retirement at Lake Monticello, Debby immersed herself in the community, including working as a children's educational tour guide at Monticello. As she got to know the area, she felt there were many unmet needs among the children in Fluvanna County. In fact, with restored health this year, she had planned to begin volunteering in the public schools.
Debby centered her career in active support of at-risk children and those lacking the structure at home to put them at equal footing with their peers. To continue her lifetime work, the Endowment will fund the needs of the youth within Fluvanna County. The Endowment will be separately managed and a part of The Rotary Foundation of Fluvanna County Virginia. The Foundation Board is working with local school guidance counseling personnel and administrators to help uncover needs within the community.
Allowing kids to be kids, free of day-to-day worries such as finances, was something that Debby believed in very much, and through the Endowment, we hope to do that for as many children as possible.
PLANNED PROJECTS
The Endowment’s first official project, “Bright Start for Kids,” launched in August. The program provided back-to-school necessities for at-risk first, second and third graders in Fluvanna County. The Endowment board is worked in close coordination with the Fluvanna County school administration to ensure that “Bright Start for Kids” backpacks were ready for distribution prior to the August 11th start of school. Each backpack was stuffed with all the critical school supplies needed to help prepare a student for his/her first day back.
Assistant Superintendent of Schools for Fluvanna County Maurice Carter says this program is happening at a great time. “The school system here in Fluvanna has grown, and we have greater needs to fulfill.” Carter himself was raised and educated in Fluvanna County and chose to come back to work here as a way of giving back to the community. “I know Fluvanna well – both as a kid growing up here and now as an educational administrator, and I am certain that there are a lot of children here who will benefit from the ‘Bright Start for Kids’ program.”
Future Endowment projects may include funding for field trips, medical supplies, SAT test fees, camperships, and more.

Fluvanna endowment has raised $18,000 since April
By THE DAILY PROGRESS STAFF Published:May 6, 2008
Since its inception in early April, the Rose Deborah Altschull Endowment for Youth has raised approximately $18,000 to benefit youth in Fluvanna County. Debby Altschull had a career as an educator in the Richmond area before retiring and moving to Lake Monticello. Altschull became involved in numerous community activities, including working as a children’s educational tour guide at Monticello. Altschull saw there were many unmet needs among children in Fluvanna and planned to start volunteering in the public schools this year. Altschull died, however, in February at the age of 60 after a battle with cancer. The endowment, managed by the Rotary Foundation of Fluvanna County, will use funds to provide such things as back-to-school items for needy children; scholarships for camp for children who otherwise would never have that experience; medical supplies for children with special needs that cannot be met any other way; and SAT test fees for students who have the desire to go on to some form of college education but cannot afford the fees on their own. Contributions may be written to The Rotary Foundation of Fluvanna County Virginia with a note in the memo section to direct the money to the Rose Deborah Altschull Endowment for Youth.
